PROJECT 01 / A SYSTEM IN PARTS: A MODULAR ALPHABET

Tauba Auerbach

Brief
Let’s begin the semester considering the parts and the whole. Type 2 introduces the idea of typography as complex system — i.e., visual identity system, communications system, publication system. What better way to approach this idea than through the most basic of relational systems: the alphabet. You will design a modular set of letters, numerals, and basic punctuation. In devising the system, you will be responsible for setting your own logic for a complex system of relations.

You may base your system on an existing typeface, or on a balance between weight and stress, as a starting point — but that’s not required.

Process
  • Determine a set of shapes that will form your system
  • The shapes:
  • could be based on found objects
  • or drawn segments, either 2D or 3D
  • or a stencil (see Tauba)
  • or a way of marking
  • might live primarily on screen
  • or off screen
  • anything goes in creating the your system, as long as there is logic
  • Use your shapes to create a system of letterforms, numerals, and basic punctuation

Specs
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
and/or
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
0123456789
. , ? ! & : “ “

  • Latin letterforms are assumed, but if you want to explore a different type of alphabet, I’m open to that
  • Document and present your system
  • Use your alphabet to create a typographic composition and specimen
